Office 365 – More than just the usual suspects

Office 365 offers huge productivity benefits to companies such as access for large and small enterprise to the best in class Email server/client combination, access to enterprise level Instant messaging and meeting as well as team collaboration and document storage. The best way to think of Office 365 in my view is a set of Services and Rich or web clients to make use of those services covering the basic productivity tasks used in every office

  • Word Processing
  • SpreadSheets
  • E-mail
  • Communications
  • Storage/organization

The server software making these services available live in the cloud and are Exchange, Skype for Business (Formerly Lync), SharePoint. While there are a few new server products that are more niche products such as

  • Delve which is a search and presentation tool that helps you get the most of what you have access to in Office 365
  • Sway, which you can use to design story boards
  • Video which I liken Youtube for Office 365

To use these applications depending on which Office 365 plan you want to use (, you have

  • Online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. The online versions of these applications work very well. If you’ve ever worked with V-App, then you know how this feels and works. After while you feel like you are working in the application itself.
  • With some subscriptions you get access to Office Pro Plus (Rich Client versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote) available with Office 365 Pro Plus, Enterprise E3 and Enterprise E5 plans

These are just some of the options you get when you open your Admin center, but what if you need more? Microsoft offers some cloud based applications through Office 365 that compliment it and will help your business grow. You can see these via subscriptions in your Office 365 tenant. I am going to talk about some of the really great ones that I really like.

What else is there?

Dynamics CRM Online – A customer relationship management suite. Dynamics CRM is one of the leaders in this field and is extremely powerful. If you’re running any kind of a sales, marketing or event a help desk, you will want to look at this option.

Project Online – This is the essential application for project managers and project teams to collaborate and schedule project resources and is available with a cloud version. When you order this service, you also get access to the Microsoft Project rich client.

Azure Active Directory Premium – With Office 365 you do have Azure Active directory but without a subscription, it’s very limited to adding and managing users and groups within the Office 365 Admin consoles. Azure Active Directory Premium increases your capabilities by now being able to manage devices, set up polices and manage your In the cloud Active Directory in many of the same ways you manage your on-premise AD.

Power BI Pro – Microsoft Power BI is a collection of online services and features that enables you to find and visualize data, share discoveries, and collaborate in intuitive new ways.

Visio Pro for Office 365 – Visio Pro for Office 365 gives you the ability to create professional and engaging diagrams. I am a very visual person so I am constantly designing network diagrams with Visio, and having this available in Office 365 is an awesome addition.

And finally

Yammer Enterprise – Yammer is essentially a social network for business and Microsoft just announced recently that it will be added free to every Office 365 Business offering.

These are but a few that I wanted to take notice of, ones that I find so useful and engaging and applications that just make Office 365 that much more of a rich experience. There are many more that can be found here
