Increasing agility with Office 365

When I talk about agility in this context, I am referring the ability to deliver requirements quickly. One scenario I’ve gotten over the last month is to create a SharePoint site and to securely share documents with an external vendor.

In a traditional on premise SharePoint environment, this would have been difficult. You’d have to check a bunch of boxes and work across many teams. You’d have to take into consideration

  • You’d have to configure an internet facing deployment
  • Create domain accounts for your consultants
  • Work with your network team to configure your firewall
  • Create a specific site collection

None of these are trivial tasks. In the project that we worked on, we were able to get this going quickly in a few hours and it was as simple as

  • Create Site Collection
  • Set Sharing Settings
  • Send Invitations to External Users

In my case, we wanted to the external users to authenticate, if you select this option it will require that the external parties create a Microsoft account with their companies identities.

The invited party will then receive an email and if they don’t already have a Microsoft account, they will be invited to create one.

It really is that simple and agile.
